O'Neil tried out for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still in high school. The judges loved her voice and she advanced to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges, however she suffered significant losses in the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals, when she was put in the bottom three spots and bottom two and bottom two, respectively. The judges were astonished by the outcome and urged the audience to support contestants with strong singing talents such as Melissa. In spite of consistently impressive performance from then onwards, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. O'Neil's performance on the 7th September in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie, becoming the 3rd Canadian Idol. O'Neil was immediately congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
